Week 18

The baby’s skin is developing and is covered with a greasy, wax substance called vernix caseosa, which is a fatty secretion that covers the baby from head to toe, and protects the baby from bruising and chapping while in the amniotic fluid.

If you have a girl, she would have developed a uterus and a vagina canal by the end of this week.

You might be finding it more difficult to breathe as your belly is getting larger and its starting to squash your lungs. Your internal organs will be increasingly cramped as your belly grows and takes up more space.

If you move quickly you might get slightly dizzy or light-headed, this is because your size means you produce more blood which lowers your blood pressure.

The other symptom you may get at this stage are dark patches of skin, which is due to you producing more melanin, these dark spots will disappear soon after birth.
