Cloth Nappies

Using cloth nappies (diapers)

What are cloth nappies (Diapers)?

What are cloth nappies(diapers)

People expecting their first child may do a lot of research when deciding what baby equipment to buy, such as which high chair or which pram. Very few expectant parents will do much research on the most used piece of baby equipment, their baby’s nappies.

Over the last decade the vast majority of parents have been using disposable nappies for their baby. There is a growing minority that are now rediscovering the alternative to disposable nappies, modern cloth nappies or real nappies or cloth diapers (for mothers in the US).

Why are parents increasingly choosing modern cloth nappies.

There are many reasons for using cloth nappies (diapers):

*Cloth Diapers are Economical
*Cloth Nappies are Easy to use
*Cloth Diapers are Environmentally friendly
*Cloth Nappies are Good for your baby

What will I need to buy to get started with cloth nappies (cloth diapers)

To get started with cloth nappies (diapers) you will need to start with:

  • two dozen cloth nappies or fitted nappies, if square cloth nappies you might like to add a couple of fitted nappies for special days out or overnight use.
  • at least 6 nappy covers (which can come in all sorts of funky designs now)
  • at least 20 washable nappy liners

The more nappies you have the less often you have to clean and reuse them. Organise your washing schedule to suit you and the number of cloth nappies you have. Typically you will need to wash the cloth nappies two to four times a week.

How do I use cloth nappies (cloth diapers)?

Fitted Cloth Nappies (diapers) look like Disposables – with gathered elastic legs and velcro fasteners so no folding or pinning.

Square Terry Towelling nappies are the traditional cloth nappy that has been around for ages. They don’t restrict the baby’s movements or leak as much as you might think, however, it does take some practice to perfect your folding.

You can get biogradeable nappy liners  which can be disposed off down the toilet, or disposable liners that can be put in the bin.

Breathable Nappy covers (avoid the cheaper PVC or plastic nappy covers) as these will make the baby sweat.
